Our Story

An education in the Mercy tradition invites us to take up a challenge – one that encourages us to develop fully our own God given talents. At the same time, it enkindles within us a desire to assist others, as they too ‘may have life, and have it the full’. [JOHN 10:10]

The Sisters of Mercy established St Mary Magdalene’s School in 1957, and so instilled a deep committment to honour the Mercy values in everything we do. Today, the Mercy Education values continue to be embedded in our curriculum to educate students with an understanding of the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social aspects of their lives.

Compassion

We encourage and practice compassion within our school and community by putting our Faith in Action with fundraising activities, and promoting inclusion and kindness throughout our school.

Justice

Through our school policies and pastoral care, we create fairness and justice in our relationships with students, staff, and families and in our daily interactions with others through words, actions and attitude.

Hospitality

We remove barriers that stop us from extending hospitality to ensure we are an inclusive and kind community.

Respect

We show respect and recognise we must earn our communities respect through our words, actions, and attitudes.

Service

Service is using our talents and gifts to help others, thereby enriching our classrooms, our school, and our broader community.

Courage

Our school is a safe space where children can learn to show courage through attempting difficult tasks, changing behaviour, taking action against injustice, or tackling personal difficulty.

Our Patron Saint

Mary Magdalene is our Patron Saint and one of the most prominent women of the New Testament. Along with the church, our school celebrates Mary Magdalene for her examples of loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ.

Mary was one of the few who remained with Jesus during his agonising time on the Cross. She was also, famously, the first to see Jesus after his resurrection. She then bought the good news of the resurrection to the Apostles, becoming the first to announce the rising on Christ to a new life. Mary was seen as the ‘Apostle to the Apostles’!

Mary Magdalene’s story affirms the voice of women in the church, and our school is proud to honour such a courageous woman as our Patron. Her strength, love, devotion, and commitment to the word of Jesus Christ is an example for us all.

We celebrate the Feast of St Mary Magdalene each year on July 22.

What do our families have to say?

I researched many local schools before choosing St Mary Magdalene’s School for my two sons. The reason why I chose this school is because of how confident and learned the graduating students were and I wanted that for my sons. I liked the fact that teachers had ESO support in the classroom. I also liked that it was a small school with secure fencing around the boundaries.

SMM Family

My daughter has benefited from the dedicated staff and safe learning environment. As a parent it is reassuring and a great feeling to know that your child is happy and learning!

SMM Family

I like St Mary Magdalene's because my children get a good education in a diverse, safe, and happy learning environment.

The school community is very accepting and inclusive.

I like this school because we respect, honour and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and traditions.
