Uniform and Presentation

Wearing the school uniform reflects our identity not only at school but also within the wider community.

The St Mary Magdalene’s school uniform is viewed as a reflection of our aims and values in our vision to develop responsible, well presented and standard driven students. The uniform symbolises belonging, respect for equity, consideration and appreciation of convenience, aesthetics and pride in our identity. The school, at all times, strives for the highest standards of uniform, grooming and general appearance.

The full uniform is to be worn, to and from school, and at school each day. If necessity requires a temporary departure from the uniform, a written note from parents/caregiver and/ or Doctor’s Certificate is required. A plain white singlet or chesty t-shirt is allowed underneath for extra warmth. Additional items such as wet weather gear that are NOT part of the uniform are generally NOT permitted. It is expected that students conduct themselves appropriately when representing the school through wearing their uniform in accordance with the below guidelines.

The St Mary Magdalene’s School uniform is as follows:

  • School short sleeved Polo with school emblem – Purple (unisex)
  • Skort with school emblem – Black
  • Knit Shorts with school emblem – Black (unisex)
  • Fleece Trackpants with school emblem – Black (unisex)
  • Varsity Jacket with school emblem – Black/White (unisex)
  • Bucket Hat with school emblem – Black (unisex)
  • Sport Socks (white or black)
  • Appropriate footwear (black or mainly white sneakers) with appropriate coloured shoelaces

NOTES:

  • Year 6 students may wear the commemorative senior polo shirt.
  • The wearing of similar items with excessive brand names or logos (Nike, adidas etc) are not permitted.
  • Jeans and other styled loose-fitting pants are not permitted.
  • Shorts and skorts must be at an appropriate length to ensure the dignity of the individual.
  • Hooded jumpers with other imagery or logos are not permitted.

Presentation and Grooming:

Jewellery and Cosmetics

Jewellery, in general, should not be worn to school, however, the following basic items are permitted:

  • A watch: Please note that iWatches and similar items are generally not permitted, and consultation should occur with staff if discussion needs to take place.
  • Earrings: No more than one in each ear lobe only. Size is restricted to sleeper, stud or ‘huggy’ style only.
  • Necklaces: Crucifix or affiliated religious medal on a plain chain.

Items not permitted include:

  • Nail polish, graffiti on skin and visible makeup including fake eye lashes and lip glosses.
  • Toy or plastic jewellery, not including sensory necklaces or similar items.

Hair

In the interests of maintaining neatness, cleanliness, safety and uniformity, the following applies in respect of students’ hair:

  • At all times students’ hair is to be kept neat and clean. Parents will be contacted if there are visible and live headlice within the child’s hair.
  • Students with hair longer than collar length must always have their hair tied up or tied back using an approved hair management device. Hair must not cover the face or eyes. 
  • Each hair management device will be considered individually as to its suitability for approval. The types of hair management devices which might be approved may include hair clips, head-bands, ribbons, scrunchies, rubber and other elastic bands. They need to be black, purple or white in colour. The list is indicative only and is not intended to be exhaustive or conclusive. Multi coloured hair accessories are not appropriate for school.
  • Haircuts, hair styles or hair colouring which do not comply reasonably with the standards of presentation required by the school are not permitted. By way of example the types of haircuts, hair-styles or hair colouring which are not permitted include mohawk cuts, skin head styles and other extremes of style and colour.

Hats

Like any part of the uniform hats need to be maintained in good order and replaced if worn, frayed, torn or marked. The only acceptable hat is the St Mary Magdalene’s School hat. The wearing of hats is encouraged all year round and enforced in Terms 1 and 4.

Care of Uniform

All articles of personal property including the school uniform should be clearly labelled. Money and other valuables should not be left in bags, on desks or in classrooms. Any items of value can be left at the Front Office for safe keeping. Students should not bring toys or other items of personal value to school. The school cannot be held liable for any damage to any personal belongings.
