Newsletter, Week 10, Term 1, 2026

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that we are about to enter the final week of Term 1. It has been a term full of fun, new learnings, rekindling of old and new friendships and a lot of community engagement. We continue to drive the message that this school is built on community, and this term has been no exception. We thank you for your active involvement in our school community and for your genuine care and support of our staff. We wish you all the best for a safe holiday period when it arrives at the end of next week.

Holy Week

We are now in the most important week in the Catholic calendar – Holy Week, and we continue to prepare ourselves through our Lenten commitments. This week we have celebrated the events of Holy Week as a school. We thank our staff and students for the reverent way they led us in prayer and reflection. As we look forward to our Easter celebrations this weekend, let us take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Easter. As a Catholic community, Easter reminds us of the triumph of life over death, hope over despair, and love over fear. This Easter, we invite you to reflect on the hollow Easter egg as a symbol of the empty tomb of Christ and the joy of His Resurrection. It is a beautiful reminder that, through faith, we are called to embrace renewal and share love and kindness with those around us. We wish you all a blessed and safe Easter.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you for the prompt way you booked for Parent Teacher Interviews. This was a seamless process and allows families to book times around their family commitments. We commend and thank our staff for their preparation and the professional way they conducted these important conversations. We trust that you found this to be a valuable conversation, and you left with a strong understanding of your child’s start to the year. The next feedback you will receive regarding your child’s learning will be via the Semester One Report which will be released at the end of Term 2.

Sports Day Appreciation

Last Friday we came together as a school community to celebrate SPORTS DAY. The weather was perfect, and it was a wonderful day of action and fair play. What a treat it was to see our school buzzing with families. We acknowledge the work of Mr Cristian Morgado who put in hours of work behind the scenes to make this day possible. Congratulations to McAuley for taking out the House Cup and to Fitzpatrick for winning the Spirit Award. For the second year we awarded our prestigious Doube/Hughes Trophy to the 100 metre and 800m sprint champion students. Both of these races were won by Cohob and Arpan from Year 5/6. A mighty effort. Check out some of the photos of Sports Day below, or here on our Facebook page! The spirit of teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship was truly commendable.

ATSI Excursion

What a joy it was for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who attended the Cultural Thriving People Event last week. Experiences like this are a powerful opportunity for connection country and a beautiful way for culture to be shared together. We thank Ms Petersen and Ms Kathy who came along and supported our students at this event. Check out the photos of all the fun we had!

EdSmart emails

The majority of school correspondence now comes via the EdSmart platform. This results in you receiving an email with information that may be combined with an online form to sign. If you have not been receiving information, it may be that your email address if no longer active or the school doesn’t have your most up to date emails. To avoid missing important notices please ensure you are receiving these emails and monitor your inbox where appropriate.

Week 11 is busy!

There are lots of school events on next week and there will be times when the school yard seems a little empty. Please take note of the below information to help with your family planning. For information about select events please liaise with your child’s teacher.

  • Monday – School closed: EASTER MONDAY
  • Tuesday – Resurrection Liturgy: 2:15pm (All Welcome)
  • Thursday – Swimming Carnival
  • Thursday – Year 5/6 Camp commences
  • Friday – Year 1/2 and Year 4 Excursion
  • Friday – Year 5/6 Camp concludes

Uniform Reminder for Term 2

All the signs are there to show the gentle change of season and students are coming to school with their jackets and in trackpants. This is a timely reminder to ensure we are wearing our correct winter uniform. Brand name trackpants (adidas, nike, etc) are not a part of our school uniform. Black jeans are also not appropriate. For reference, our entire school uniform is available at Lowe’s within the Elizabeth City Centre. Please consider using the school holiday break to ensure your child’s uniform is meeting our standards.

Sports Day 2026

Sports Day 2026 – A Fantastic Success!

Our annual Sports Day was a wonderful celebration of participation, teamwork, and school spirit. Congratulations to McAuley (Red Team) for taking out the House Cup, and to Fitzpatrick for being awarded the prestigious Kath Platten Spirit of Sport Trophy.

We commend all teams—McAuley, Fitzpatrick, and Coolock—for their enthusiasm and for demonstrating our Mercy Values throughout the day.

A special congratulations to Cohob, who achieved an outstanding double by winning both the Hughes and Doube Girls 100m Sprint and the Fred Platten Memorial 800m. Similarly, Arpan delivered an exceptional performance, winning both the Hughes and Doube Boys 100m Sprint and the Fred Platten Memorial 800m.

Thank you to all staff, parents, and especially our student captains and ambassadors for their support and contributions in making the day such a success.

Gymnastics Clinic & Sporting Achievement

We extend our thanks to TrySkills Gymnastics for delivering an engaging 4-week clinic for our Reception to Year 2 students. The program provided students with the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills while building confidence and coordination in a fun and supportive environment.

Congratulations also to Jakob McCafferty for his selection in the SAPSASA District Softball Team. Jakob will represent our school at Barratt Reserve, West Beach—an outstanding achievement! We wish him the very best of luck and commend him on his hard

Gospel Reflection for:

Palm Sunday: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Jesus is welcomed with joy and excitement as he enters Jerusalem, yet he comes humbly, not with power or status. Palm Sunday reminds us that God’s ways are often quieter and gentler than we expect. We are invited to welcome Jesus not just in celebration, but in the everyday moments of our lives.

I wonder how we choose to welcome Jesus today?

Holy Thursday: “Take and eat; this is my body.”

At the Last Supper, Jesus shares a meal and gives himself in love to his friends. He shows that love is expressed through service, generosity, and presence. Holy Thursday reminds us that caring for others is at the heart of Christian life.

I wonder how we can show love through our actions each day?

Good Friday: “Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last.”

Good Friday invites us to pause and reflect on the suffering and death of Jesus. Even in pain and rejection, Jesus remains faithful to love. The cross shows us how deeply God cares for the world.

I wonder how we respond when we see suffering around us?

Easter Sunday: “He is not here; for he has been raised.”

Easter Sunday proclaims that life and hope are stronger than death. The empty tomb reminds us that God brings new beginnings, even after darkness. We are called to live as people of hope and joy.

I wonder where we might notice new life or hope this Easter?

Walking together through Holy Week

Holy Week commemorates the final week of Jesus’s life, from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his resurrection. During Holy Week, we are invited as a school community to walk closely with Jesus in the most profound moments of His earthly journey. This sacred time in the Church’s calendar offers us an opportunity not only to remember these events, but to reflect deeply on their meaning and how they shape our mission as a Catholic school.

During Holy Week, our students thoughtfully shared and “broke open” the story of Jesus’ final days, bringing faith to life through prayer, reflection and action. Beginning with Palm Sunday, students recalled Jesus’ joyful welcome into Jerusalem and reflected on how we too can welcome others with glad hearts. On Holy Thursday, they explored the Last Supper, learning about Jesus’ gift of love in the Eucharist, and the Washing of the Feet, which reminded us that true leadership is found in humble service. Through the Stations of the Cross, students walked with Jesus on his journey of suffering and love, considering how compassion and kindness matter in our world today.

On our return to school on April 7, our celebrations of Easter Sunday will joyfully proclaim the Resurrection, reminding us, that hope, new life and God’s love always have the final word.

This shared journey through Holy Week deepened our students’ understanding of faith and encouraged them to live as people of hope and love.

An Easter Prayer for Families

Loving God,
we thank you for the joy of Easter and the gift of new life in Jesus.
Help our families to be places of love, forgiveness, and hope,
where kindness is shared and joy is renewed each day.

As we celebrate the risen Christ,
may we notice signs of new beginnings in our homes, our school, and our world.
Bless our families with peace, courage, and gratitude,
and help us to live as people of light and love.

Amen
