SMM Newsletter, Term 3, Week 7, 2025

Dear Families,

Welcome to the end of week 7 and finally, Spring has Sprung… We are looking forward to increased sunshine and longer days. Spring provides us an opportunity to take stock and notice all the new life around us and give thanks for our ever-changing environment. As the weather warms up, we will be reminding students to wear their school hat from the start of Term 4. Now would be a good time to find the hat and whip it through the washing machine so it is ready to go.

Happy Father’s Day…

Happy Father’s Day to all our Dads, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, mentors, and all the special men who play a vital role in the lives of our children. Your presence, your guidance, and your love help shape the next generation in ways that words can hardly capture. Whether you’re the one tying shoelaces, reading bedtime stories, cheering from the sidelines, or simply offering a quiet moment of support—your impact is immeasurable. You teach resilience, kindness, strength, and integrity through your actions every day. Wishing you a day filled with joy, connection, and the recognition you so richly deserve.

On Friday we warmly invite all father figures to our Father’s Day Liturgy – hosted by Reception/Year 1 Hill. This is from 9am in the Yarning Place. After the Liturgy we will have some warm croissants and hot drinks for our Dads to enjoy. We hope to see you there.

Staffing Announcement…

We are delighted to share with you that Mr Anthony Filpi has been appointed as our new Business Manager. Anthony brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience, and a strong background in school operations and financial management. His leadership and insight will be invaluable as we continue to move forward and strengthen our work together.

At the end of this term, we farewell Mrs Leah Dickson who commences her Maternity Leave. Leah is such an enthusiastic and vibrant member of our staff who will be missed. We welcome Ms Eldi Yzel to our staff. Ms Yzel will teacher Year 3/4 for the duration of Term 4. From Week 8 this term, Eldi and Leah will work in a team teach model to ensure a smooth handover and transition for our students. Please join us in making Eldi feel welcome.

Child Protection Week…

Next week is Child Protection Week. The 2025 theme is “Every Conversation matters: Shifting conversation to action.” This is a special week where we emphasize the importance of turning discussions about child safety into tangible actions. We value the importance of school life and home life working in partnership to keep our children safe. Do you have conversations with your child about what they do online? Do you ask them if they feel safe at school and in the community? Do you ask your child if there is anything that is bothering them? Protecting our children is everyone’s business.

Changes to ICT Laws…

As we mark Child Protection Week, it’s a powerful reminder that safeguarding children isn’t just about physical environments—it extends to the digital world too. In an age where online interaction is part of everyday life, ensuring our children are safe, supported, and informed online is more important than ever.

That’s why we want to highlight an important update coming this December: new social media regulations under the Online Safety Act will require platforms to take stronger steps to prevent children under 16 from accessing age-restricted services. These changes are designed to reduce exposure to harmful content and create safer digital spaces for young people.

While platforms will be held accountable for enforcing age restrictions, parents and carers remain the most powerful line of defence when it comes to online safety. Monitoring your child’s digital activity, setting boundaries around screen time, and having open conversations about what they see and do online are all essential steps.

Here are a few ways families can stay proactive:

  • Regularly check privacy settings and app permissions
  • Use parental controls where appropriate
  • Encourage children to speak up if something online makes them uncomfortable
  • Stay informed about the platforms and trends your child engages with

Together, we can build a safer, more supportive online world for our children—one click, one conversation, one caring adult at a time.

Madhavi Parker – Emotional Regulation Workshop…

What a wonderful turnout we had at our Parent Workshop last Wednesday. Madhavi’s wisdom and insight into how we can support our children when they are dysregulated was very well received. Our staff also experienced a professional development session where they were given skills and techniques to manage their own well being as well as gaining further tools they can use in the classroom to benefit our students.

For those who attended the session, we would love your feedback – please email info@smm.catholic.edu.au
If you were not able to attend, you may request the slides from the evening. Please request via our Front Office.

Fostering Mercy Values and Positive Behaviour

This term, we’ve honed our focus on living out the Mercy Values in everyday school life, with a renewed emphasis on promoting and celebrating positive behaviour. A key initiative has been the introduction of our Mercy Token Trade, where students can exchange a Mercy Card for a token that contributes spirit points to their House team. This simple but powerful system is already gaining strong traction, encouraging students to act with kindness, compassion, and integrity.

By shifting our lens toward what we do want to see—respect, responsibility, and empathy—we’re building a culture that uplifts and affirms. Acknowledging and rewarding positive behaviour not only reinforces our shared values but also inspires others to follow suit. It’s about creating a ripple effect of goodness, one Mercy Card at a time.

Aprim News Week 7

Happy Father’s Day!

Here at St Mary Magdalene’s we offer our prayers and well wishes to all the dads and father figures in our lives. May you have a blessed day sharing with your families and children in your care. On Friday we will have a special liturgy led by Miss Hill’s Reception and Year 1 students, followed by a coffee and croissant after for all the dads in the community.

Sacremental Program This week students in our Sacramental Program will be receiving the first of 3 sacraments – their First Reconciliation at St Ann’s Church on Friday evening. Please extend your prayers and congratualtions to these students and their families as the students take their first steps in becoming fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. Our prayers and thoughts are with you this week.

St Mother Teresa – feast day September 5th

This week during community prayer we focussed on St Mother Teresa. She was an instrumental leader who led by serving the poor and founding the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, her purpose was to provide care, love, and support to people in great need.

The quote “Peace begins with a smile” is attributed to Mother Teresa. This simple yet powerful statement encourages small acts of kindness, suggesting that a single smile can bridge divides, create connection, and foster a ripple effect of positivity and peace within communities. As a school we took on this challenge of greeting each other with a smile to create a wave of peace, love and happiness in our school community.

MITIOG

Last week you would have received notification from your child’s teacher about the Made In the Image of God Curriculum being taught in your child’s class. The Made in the Image of God Sexuality and Respectful Relationships Curriculum (MITIOG) is the official program for sexuality and respectful relationships education in South Australian Catholic Schools for Years R-12. Each year our students engage with age-appropriate curriculum content regarding sexuality and respectful relationships through MITIOG. This year this curriculum will be taught during this term Week 7 – 10.

Special Inclusion:

Andrew Chinn has written some new music as a part of a wider collection of music for masses. He has especially asked for some support from our school with this. A few weeks ago, we were approached by Andrew and his team at Butterfly house for an original artwork and information about St Mary Magdalene. The artwork will be used in the video clip, while the images and writing will form a separate online resource. Charlotte Hooke who wrote the information and Nazia Khan who drew the artwork worked very hard to have this completed for Andrew and his team and these were sent last week. I have attached the work that they have done to the newsletter this week.

Masses and Liturgies

This term there will be a Combined Year 3/4 and 5/6 class Mass held on Friday the 19th September at 12:00pm in the Mary Magdalene Chapel with Father Santosh. Please mark the date in your calendars. Students will send home invitations later in the term to invite families to attend.

Mary Magdalene

Also known as Mary of Magdala

Born: Late first century CE in Magdala, Roman Judaea

Died: Approximately 50 CE

Feast day: July 22nd

Patron Saint: Contemplative life, converts, hairdressers, glove makers, penitent sinners, people ridiculed for their piety, perfumers, pharmacists, and women.

Mary Magdalene (her name indicates that she was from Magdala) is an important part of the bible as one of Jesus’s friends and followers. Jesus helped Mary through some difficulties she faced in life.

History suggests that Mary Magdalene was very rich, and beautiful, but chose to leave that life behind to follow Jesus. She was with him during his crucifixion and was the first to see his resurrection. Mary travelled with Jesus and helped support his work out of the resources they shared. She helped him tell stories of God. And even helped a married couple become Christian. Mary was a believer in God and would pray to him every day. After Mary had delivered the message that Jesus had resurrected, she is often referred to as the “Apostle to the Apostles”. Legend has it that after Jesus resurrected, Mary and some other disciples were put on a boat without rudder. They were left on the boat in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea to die. By some miracle, the boat landed in Marseille, France. Mary then shared Christian stories with everyone and even helped people to become Christian.

Mary spent her last few years praying to God even more, and his angels would come and sing her their songs. On her last day she received a special blessing and died peacefully. Her remains are said to have been buried in a Church in France called Church of Maximin.

"Story Time" - Student Ambassadors visit local Kindies!

Student Ambassadors, Krislyn and Stella, have begun our new program visiting local Kindergartens and Preschools for “Story Time”.
The amazing duo did a wonderful job representing St Mary Magdalene’s School at ‘Kindy Patch – Salisbury Heights’, reading a picture book to the children. We’re very proud of how our Student Ambassadors conducted themselves on this visit, and interacted with the preschoolers. They will be venturing out to a few more local kindies over the course of the term – and we can’t wait!

A note from our OSHC

Hello Families,

I cannot believe we are almost through Term 3, 2025 is flying by! In OSHC this Term we have been busy as usual and have explored a range of activities including air dry clay, baby dolls, painting, gymnastics and large scale Jenga and dominos.

We also over the course of Week 6 held a paper plane competition where students constructed their own paper planes, and we measured the distance they flew. This was such a fun week for our students, and they showed their commitment, persistence and resilience as they tried their best to create a paper plane that could go the distance.

A big congratulations to our champion Jaxon whose plane went a total of 18m and 45cm!
