Newsletter Week 1, Term 2, 2026

Dear Families,

Welcome back to Term 2! We are ready and raring to go for another busy and exciting term. We hope the school holiday break provided your family with a chance to spend quality time together, recharge your batteries and reset after the busy start to the year. We look forward to sharing your child’s educational journey again this term and working closely with you all to offer unconditional support to your family.

Big Changes!

You will notice that there have been some big changes in our school grounds over the school holiday break. Our decking, verandah and surrounding buildings have now been demolished and relocated. You will notice our Community Hub has now been moved to the Harvey Road side of our school. The Hub is now being fitted out ready for its grand opening in a few weeks, in the meantime, the Hub is operating out of the Chapel as usual. We want to remind all families that our construction site is an out of bounds zone and is appropriately fenced off for student and community safety.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day offers us a meaningful opportunity to pause and reflect on the courage, sacrifice and service of all Australians and New Zealanders who have served our nation, past and present. It is a time to honour their legacy and consider the values of courage, mateship and compassion that continue to shape our community today. On Friday we will gather as a school to commemorate ANZAC Day. It is crucial that this important day stays relevant for young people so we can keep the ANZAC spirit and traditions alive. You are most welcome to join us for our Liturgy on Friday 1 May at 9:15am in the Yarning Place.

Mothers Day

We take this special opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the love, care and guidance of our mothers and the special women in our lives who nurture, support and inspire us each day. Their presence and dedication play an important role in shaping our families and community. Families are warmly invited to join us for our Mothers’ and Special Women’s Liturgy on Friday 8 May at 9:15am in the Yarning Place. Following the liturgy, we invite our mothers and special women to stay and enjoy a morning tea in their honour. We look forward to sharing this meaningful celebration together.

Cooler Weather.

With the cooler weather now setting in we expect to see students in their full winter uniform. Please familiarise yourself with the uniform expectations which are available on the school website. Casual jackets and jumpers are not a part of our school uniform and should be avoided. Students are not permitted to wear brand name track pants or black jeans. For cooler days, students need to be wearing the varsity jacket with our school emblem. All items are available at Lowes in the Elizabeth City Centre.

Pupil Free Days and Public Holiday

For forward planning lease familiarise yourself with the following dates this term:

  • Pupil Free Day (No School – OSHC Available) | Friday, 29 May (Week 5) – Staff Development Day
  • Public Holiday (No School – No OSHC) | Monday, 8 June (Week 7)
  • Pupil Free Day (No School – OSHC Available) | Friday, 26 June (Week 9) – Staff Development Day

Camp and Excursions

The final week of Term 1 was very exciting with many of our students out and about in our community. Our Year 5/6s had an amazing time at AFL Max and our Rec-2 students and Year 4s had a lovely day out at Gorge Wildlife Park. Check out some of the pictures below showing all the fun that was had…

Reporting Absence

A reminder to always provide reasons why your child might be absent from school. There is a direct link on our website that is very easy to use. Alternatively, please feel free to call the Front Office to provide a reason. We acknowledge that the cooler months can often bring flu and other wintery illnesses. Please keep your child at home until symptoms have passed.

Looking Ahead

Term 2 is a busy term with lots of school wide events. Please keep an eye out for EdSmart communication for large scale events and your class SeeSaw for classroom specific activities. Some of our upcoming events include Catholic Education Week, Special Persons Day, Be You Day, National Reconciliation Week and a range of Sporting Carnivals. As always, we love having families involved in these events.

Mid Year Reception Intake

A reminder that if your child turns 5 on or before the 31st October 2026, they are eligible to start school from Term 3. If you have not enrolled yet, please contact our Front Office immediately. If you know of anyone seeking enrolment please encourage them to contact us, we love to welcome new families into our school.

We look forward to seeing you around our amazing school community.

Shaping our future together,
Belinda and Gareth

OSHC News!

Hello Families!

Welcome back for Term 2 of 2026. I hope you had a fantastic Easter break and are easing back into the swing of things.

If you utilise OSHC you may be aware that our OSHC group has grown considerably throughout Term 1. We expect our numbers to grow even more as the year progresses which is very exciting!

On this note though it is becoming increasingly important to book your child in to OSHC using the proper channels and our Xplor software if your child or children require OSHC care. Please note that spaces are limited due to our staffing and licensing capabilities and that not all sessions will be able to be accommodated, particularly casual OSHC sessions.

Please follow the following process to request a session for your child/ren.

  • Ensure you are enrolled to our service via our software Xplor. Children must be enrolled via Xplor – this is separate to a school enrolment. If your child/ren needs to be enrolled please use the following link: https://prodadmin.myxplor.com/enrollment_v2/centre/HzzdbPjN7ZvvYNSsoPWFKw
  • Once enrolled you must request a booking via the booking feature of Xplor. If we have spaces available this may be accepted automatically. In most instances this will be a request for a space which must be approved by an OSHC admin.
  • Once your request has been accepted or rejected by OSHC admin you will receive an e-mail notification to your enrolment e-mail with the outcome of your request. It is important that you read this e-mail carefully, so you know if your booking has been accepted.

Please note the following important details for booking OSHC care:

  • Booking requests must be made more than 24 hours in advance to the session. Xplor will not allow requests for sessions to be sent to OSHC admin if the requested session occurs within less than 24 hours. If you require OSHC care for an OSHC session within this 24 hour window you must contact OSHC admin directly via the OSHC mobile number 0437 609 630 during OSHC admins working hours which are as follows 6:30am – 9:00am and 12:30pm – 6:00pm.
  • Communications made outside of OSHC admin and business hours, including weekends will not be responded to until OSHC admins next working period.
  • If you require support in enrolling, making bookings, CCS or fees you will need to schedule an appointment with OSHC admin/Director. Admin staff/Director will be unable to assist you in these matters during OSHC operating hours as they are at this time actively working with children. Please use the OSHC mobile number to schedule an appointment if required.
  • In the instance that you require to cancel a booked session or your child is absent. Please notify cancel your booking or mark your child as absent via Xplor’s booking feature. Please note you are unable to cancel sessions that are expected to occur within 24 hours. These sessions will be charged and marked as an absence.
  • Additionally, when cancelling sessions please ensure you are cancelling – not marking the session as absent. Sessions that are cancelled do not incur charges, in some instances sessions marked as absent may still be charged.

Thanks,

Jenn and the OSHC Team!

Gospel Reflection

John 14: 1-12 | This coming weekend the Gospel passage is from John. In this passage, Jesus comforts his followers when they feel worried and unsure. He tells them to trust in God and to trust in him. Jesus explains that he is preparing a place for them, showing that God’s love is welcoming and never ends. When he says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” Jesus reminds us that following him helps us know God and learn how to live with love, hope, and trust, even when life feels uncertain.

Wondering questions...

  • I wonder what Jesus meant when he said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled”?
  • I wonder how Jesus can be “the way”for us in our everyday lives—at home and at school?
  • I wonder what it means for us to continue Jesus’ work of love in the world today?

Loving God,
When our hearts feel worried or unsure,
help us to trust in you.
Thank you for Jesus,
who shows us the way to love,
the truth that gives us hope,
and the life that brings peace.
Bless our families and our school community,
and guide us each day.
Amen.

Living Mercy at St Mary Magdalene’s School

At SMM, Living Mercy begins with respect and compassion for one another. In our classrooms and playgrounds, students are encouraged through our behaviour matrix to listen attentively, use kind words, and value each person’s dignity. These everyday actions reflect our belief that everyone is created in God’s image and deserves to be treated with care, understanding, and empathy.

‘Be You’ Day

On Friday 22nd of May, our school will celebrate a special “Be You” Day, inspired by Project Compassion’s theme Unite Against Poverty. Led by our enthusiastic Year 5/6 students, the day will invite all learners from Reception to Year 6 to take part in a series of hands‑on activity rotations designed to spark creativity, teamwork, and empathy. Together, students will explore what it means to embrace their individuality while contributing to a shared mission of supporting others and making a positive difference in our world.

This launch will invite students and us as staff into an experience of what it means to ’be’ during Lent: be present, be still, be aware, be compassionate, be hopeful…and we want to take action!

Sacrament Program 2026

The Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist form the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. If your child is 8 years of age (or older) and you would like them to be involved in the program for 2026, please contact Amiee Tullio or Edna Dumbrell at the Elizabeth Catholic Parish as soon as possible. Our program begins in Week 1 with a Commissioning Mass at St. Thomas More Church on Saturday May 2 at 6pm or Sunday May 3 at 10am for students enrolled in the program.

You can view the Bulletin – Elizabeth Catholic Parish to find out about events happening within the Elizabeth Catholic Parish.
